The goals in selling French market baskets is to reduce the number of plastic bags people
get from stores. These bags are an environmental blight. Did you know:
* Over 3 billion plastic bags are used every year in
America. Every year 4-5 trillion plastic bags are used in the world. *
In South Africa they call the plastic bags littering the countryside
"The National Flower". * San Francisco banned plastic bags on March 28
2007, and projects savings of 450,000 gallons of gasoline as a result!
* In 2002 Ireland levied a 25 cent surcharge on plastic bags at the
grocery store, resulting in a 90% reduction in the number of bags used.
Our French market baskets are hand woven in Moroccan villages,
typically by farmers for extra income. The leather is then added in
Marrakech before being shipped to the US. The baskets are woven from
sustainably grown palm leaf, water reed and wild grasses. The leather
is either goat or cow and is dyed using traditional techniques for
leather treatment.
