The legend of the beautiful handmade French Savonnerie Carpets began in the 1600s, where production began at the behest of Henry IV, upon establishing artisan workshops in the Louvre.

Savonnerie carpet weaving was moved to the Savonnerie workshops outside of Paris, an abandoned soap factory, hence the name "Savonnerie". The earliest production of Savonnerie were referred to as "Louis XIII carpets", and Savonnerie carpets were woven for palaces, with production directed by artists of the royal courts!

Savonnerie motifs taken from Dutch and Flemish textiles and paintings, made the beautiful rugs that adorned some of the most famous places, such as the 105 Savonnerie carpets, woven for the "Grande Galerie" and "Galerie d'Apollon" in the Louvre.

The period of greatness in Savonnerie lasted between 1650 and 1789, however, during the French Revolution, manufacturing in Savonnerie moved to the prestigious Gobelins in Paris. The Gobelins was a royal factory for weaving tapestries, renowned worldwide, for it's quality.

Today, artisans use the same techniques used by revered craftsmen from France. French style Savonnerie carpets are recreated down to the last detail in every hand-knotted Savonnerie rug, painstakingly crafted in the finest wool and silk on a cotton foundation. Classic French style, historical patterns, beautiful!
