Some of the finest Oriental rugs, Oushak rugs reference a style of weaving that originated in Turkey, using a particular family of designs, named for the city of Uşak, Turkey. Many of the masterpieces of the 15th and 16th centuries were attributed to Oushak, often depicted in paintings by Lorenzo Lotto and Hans Holbein the Younger, placed in a way to suggest status. In the European markets, the earlier types and patterns of Turkish carpets are now often called "Lotto carpets" and "Holbein carpets".
