Lively, flat-woven Soumack rugs are known for their characteristic geometric patterns including tribal motifs, small birds, and geometric animals, motifs for fertility and protection, and sometimes Persian style floral garden motifs. The Soumack style of weaving originated in the mountainous region of the Caucasus, considered the center of rug production from the early seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A flat woven tapestry weaving style - a technique called weft wrapping - creates the characteristic weave for which a Soumack rug is known. Legend has it that the Soumack name may derive from the Arabic and Syriac word summāq, red, from one of the species of flowering plants in the sumac family, such as dyer's sumach used to make dyestuffs, as Soumack rugs are often woven in a vibrant palette. Today's Soumack rugs follow the traditions and weaves of the original carpets of the seventeenth century, considered to be among the great masterpieces of classical/early rug production. Crafted with the finest quality wool, in patterns of historical significance - these Soumack rugs are stunning additions to any room, setting the stage for any style of décor. Rich in tradition, the colorful, strong and durable weaves of Soumack rugs with their finely crafted geometric patterns enliven any space!
